Jasmine Rivera seemed like an ordinary teenager from Scranton, Pennsylvania. She played sports, attended school, and had dreams like many other girls her age. But underneath the surface, Jasmine’s life was far more complicated. From a young age, she sought love and belonging, something she never truly found in her broken family life. By the time she was 17, Jasmine had already become a mother and was living with her boyfriend, Tonie Future, in a small apartment in the projects. What started as a teenage romance soon turned into a life of crime, as Jasmine found herself ensnared in the world of the notorious Bloods street gang. Tonie Future, Jasmine’s high school sweetheart and father to her child, had recently fallen under the influence of his older brother, Jeff Future, a high-ranking member of the Bloods. While Jasmine had reservations about the lifestyle Tonie was falling into, her love for him-and the makeshift family they had built-kept her from leaving. As their relationship deepened, Jasmine found herself drawn into criminal activities, participating in robberies and burglaries, all in an effort to prove her loyalty to Tonie and the gang.
On July 30, 2009, the gang’s violent underworld caught up with them in the most tragic way. That night, a group of women driving on a remote road outside Scranton discovered a body lying in the middle of the street. They immediately called the police, but what was first reported as a hit-and-run soon turned into a murder investigation. The victim, 29-year-old Allen Fernandez, had been shot 12 times at close range in what police would later describe as a professional hit. As detectives began piecing together the evidence, they discovered that Fernandez, a former Bloods gang member, had recently been released from a halfway house in Hazleton, PA, where he had been trying to distance himself from his criminal past. His family believed he had left the gang life behind, but the circumstances of his death suggested otherwise. The number of gunshot wounds, combined with the shell casings found at the scene from both a .40 caliber and 9mm weapon, indicated multiple shooters-and pointed to a gang-related execution. The investigation took a significant turn when detectives uncovered cellphone records linking Fernandez to a number belonging to Barbara Future, the mother of Jeff and Tonie. With this connection, investigators began to focus on the Future brothers, and Jasmine soon became a key figure in their web of criminal activity. Surveillance footage and interviews with residents of
the halfway house revealed that Fernandez had purchased a burner phone just hours before his murder and had received several calls from Barbara Future’s phone. It became clear that the brothers had lured Fernandez to Scranton, where they ambushed him. Despite their efforts to cover their tracks, the pressure mounted on Jasmine, Tonie, and Jeff as police began closing in on them. Under interrogation, Jasmine confessed to her role in a series of other crimes, including the robbery of a Dunkin Donuts and the burglary of a Pennsylvania State Trooper’s home, where a .40 caliber Beretta service weapon had been stolen. That same weapon was later used in the murder of Allen Fernandez. Jasmine’s devotion to Tonie and her involvement in these crimes stemmed from a misguided sense of loyalty and love. She had been willing to do anything to support Tonie, even if it meant participating in violent acts that would ultimately destroy her life. In the end, Jasmine’s testimony helped prosecutors secure convictions against both Jeff and Tonie Future for first-degree murder, and Christian Kenyon, another accomplice, for his role in the crime. Jasmine herself was sentenced to prison for her part in the burglary and robbery.
For Allen Fernandez’s family, the loss was devastating. He had been trying to turn his life around, only to be brutally murdered by the very people he had once been associated with. For Jasmine, the cost of her loyalty to Tonie Future was high. She lost her freedom, her future, and any chance of a normal life, all because of her love for a man who led her down a dangerous path.
